Hege Kverneland, CTO at National Oilwell Varco.

“We should not fool ourselves into thinking that the oil and gas industry has all the best ideas. We need to study and learn from other industries,” said Hege Kverneland.

The Chief Technology Officer at National Oilwell Varco gave a presentation of what an increasingly digital world looks like from NOV’s point of view.

“I get very upset when we try to reinvent the wheel. We need to realize that other industries have solutions and technology that we could benefit from,” said Kverneland.

She felt compelled to talk about big data, ‘since everyone else talks about big data’.

“We have all this data, but at times we don’t know what to do with it. Big data is worthless unless we can make use of it to make qualified decisions,” said Kverneland.

Used properly, big data will provide the foundation for extensive use of condition-based maintenance, and more efficient operations, according to Kverneland.

“The rig of the future is already here. We just need to add software. Software levels out differences between drillers and crews and basically leaves you with only your best drillers,” said Kverneland.
