Hege Kverneland, CTO at National Oilwell Varco.

National Oilwell Varco has collected data from its equipment for years, but only recently made real use of it.

“We have had our first breakthrough: From data collected through a number of years, data we never made useful before, emerged patterns which identified risk components. We now utilize these data to improve production and maintenance,” said Hege Kverneland, Chief Technical Officer at NOV in Houston.

At GCE NODE’s Top Leader Forum in Kristiansand, Kverneland gave a presentation of how NOV utilizes the digital transformation to build a closer relationship with its customers.

“We are developing greater software capabilities to improve asset performance management. A good example is Blowout Preventers (BOPs). NOV has delivered a high number of BOPs to the industry. This enables us to see patterns from a variety of BOPs, which increases the accuracy of our predictions,” said Kverneland.

She concluded that data gathering and data analytics will enable NOV to write letters like this one:

Dear customer!
Your regulator valve is going to fail in 18 days.
Spare parts enclosed.
Love, NOV
