Tom Fidjeland has led GCE NODE since 2020.

More companies joined, project funding increased, and a national competence center was established. On his last day as CEO of GCE NODE, Tom Fidjeland reflects on his tenure.

Since 2020, Fidjeland has led the cluster through changing times.

“The biggest shift is in the direction of renewable energy. Originally established as a cluster of companies in the oil and gas industry, GCE NODE has evolved to include more ocean industries, in particular offshore wind,” says Fidjeland.

This has led to the entry of more companies and companies with a different business idea. During his years at GCE NODE, Fidjeland has seen the number of cluster participants increase from 90 to 120.

EXCITING MIX
“One third is primarily in oil and gas, one third is in renewables, and one third have no predominant industry affiliation. GCE NODE has naturally expanded to include a part of the renewable industry that will build on competence and technology from oil and gas,” says Fidjeland.

He sees great business opportunities in what he describes as an ‘exciting mix’ of companies.

“The renewable companies will assist us in the transition to a more renewable-oriented supplier industry, while the well-established oil service companies can speed up the build-up and scale-up of the renewable companies. By working together, we will all be better off,” says Fidjeland.

INCREASED PROJECT FUNDING
In addition to offshore wind, GCE NODE has supported cluster companies with digitalization, cyber security, sustainability and more – and built a hydrogen network comprising more than 200 companies.

“A broader approach to cluster activities has led to an increase in revenues which has more than compensated for the decrease in funding from the Norwegian cluster program, which is fading out – as planned. This has been a necessary shift, and it is also a probable way going forward,” says Fidjeland.

Four and a half year after he joined GCE NODE, and having served more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, Tom Fidjeland is leaving. Starting Monday, he is the CEO of Umoe Mandal.

“I have loved being part of GCE NODE. It has been interesting, educational and enjoyable. I will miss the people, the companies, and the industry,” says Fidjeland.
