Officially opened in August 2023, Hywind Tampen was temporarily set back by a faulty component, resulting in less than expected output. During its first twelve months of full operation Hywind Tampen exported 316 GWh, well below the target of 390 GWh.
However, during the following six months, production of electricity has been much higher.
“Please take into account that these six months are during the winter, which is high season for power generation. Still, we are pleased by the performance of our wind farm,” says Arild Lithun, Manager Operations Hywind Tampen at Equinor.
Hywind Tampen is located 140 kilometers off the western coast of Norway at water depths between 260 and 300 meters. It operates in harsh weather conditions where the operational uptime is limited, especially during winter months.
Holding the title as the world’s largest wind farm, Hywind Tampen consists of 11 turbines based on the floating Hywind concept, developed by Equinor.
Hywind Tampen has a system capacity of 94.6 MW and covers about 35 per cent of the annual need for electricity on the five platforms Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C.
